Speak Easy in Burns, Oregon

When traveling across over half of the United States, on our way to the Oregon Coast, we decided to take Route 20, an almost straight shot across the middle of the state. Route 20, also known as the Lincoln Highway, is a fantastic national highway we plan to take cross-country someday, but that's a different story.

In our ongoing effort to find the lesser-known or hidden gems of the United States, a quick internet search led us to Burns, OR on our way to Yachats, OR. Now Burns itself is going through a bit of a rediscovery and a lot of that rediscovery is in part thanks to the Keady Family and their amazing remodel of the historic Central Hotel.

This delightful Prohibition-era, self checkin hotel is also an event venue. If you get a chance, try to secure a tour the Boiler room which is fashioned like a 1920's speak easy.

Having a family of four, but including two older teens, we decided to go all out and enjoy for ourselves the Hop Gold suite, while each kiddo had a single room to themselves. I think they really enjoyed the experience of spending the night in the Flapper Girl and the Moonshine.

The city of Burns has some great places to eat and the Keady's will be happy to give you some recommendations (we stopped by Glory Days pizza) but if you're lucky you can catch some great meals on the patio there at the Central Hotel.

Of course, no trip to Burns would be complete without talking about the surprising Route 20 coming into town. The Central Oregon Highway winds through impressive volcanic bluffs and cones.

And on the way out, Highway 20 is hauntingly desolate, but only in the most beautiful way.
